What is Academia aesthetic?

Academia is a genre of aesthetic revolving around litrature, poetry, passion of studying and learning, having several sub-genres such as Dark Academia, Light Academia, Chaotic Academia, Romantic Academia and so on. Here, we are going to focus on the clothing style with all sub-genres as a whole. Sooo lets get started?

Colour Palette

The Academia colour palette basically consists of muted, neutral and dark colours such as:
Shades of Brown
  • Shades of Brown
  • Shades of Red, especially maroon or burgundy
  • Muted shades of Pink
  • Shades of Gray
  • The supreme, Black and White

You can also try playing around with muted shades of colours such as blue, yellow and green(sage green for example) and perhaps navy blue as well. Just try to avoid neon colours and you're good to go.
Shades of Pink (muted)

Fabrics and Prints

While choosing the fabrics one has to be really careful because if not chosen correctly, they can cause a lot of discomfort, especially in summers and hot climates. The fabrics ideal for hot climates usually are:
  • Cotton
  • Linen
  • Silk
  • Satin
  • Denim
  • Chambray
  • And some specific varieties of Wool
The properties of these fabrics is basically that they are lightweight and whick away moisture, which makes them the best fabrics to wear during summers. While satin may not really be  your first choices during the summer months, it can still be worn considering if you want to pull some elegant look with blouses and dresses.
And speaking about prints, it can be anything from checks to strips as long as it's minimalistic. Though, checks or plaid prints are almost always the first choice when it comes to Academia aesthetic.

Signature styles and staples for your wardrobe

Turtlenecks and plaid blazers are known for their versatility regarding the Academia aesthetic. The elegance of beautiful ball gowns and silhouette dresses has their own significance in this aesthetic. The same for chunky knit sweaters and baggy blazers and trousers. It just depends on how you mix and match your outfit. Just  remember to not try too hard to blend in and reflect your own style as well.

Tops

  • Turtlenecks are always a big yes but considering that it is the season of heat we're talking about, you can always go for a short sleeved turtleneck or maybe one made of some lightweight fabric and lighter colour.
  • Blouses and dress shirts also go really well with this aesthetic.
  • Opt for a basic short sleeved button up shirt and you can always mix and match with trousers and skirts
  • Polo shirts would do as well!
  • Grab some basic tees and tank tops and pair them up with maybe a plaid skirt or trousers.

Bottoms:
  • Trousers, trousers and trousers. Plaid prints are always welcome. Though solid colours look great as well. I'd suggest a light colour as this is a guide meant for summers.
  • Skirts! Okay so I've to accept it now, I am a simp for plaid prints hehe. But you can go for any silhouette(pencil, A-line or skater) and colour you like but still preferably stick to the colour palette of the aesthetic.
  • Khaki shorts, as they are very breathable and go really well with the theme.
  • Mixing a little bit of cottagecore aesthetic here, flowy floral skirts are one of my top choices as well!

Dresses:

  • Black silhouette dresses never hurt!
  • Again a hint of cottagecore here! Go for some floral print dresses. Maxi or silhouette, they always look pretty and are ideal for springs and summers.
  • Satin silhouette dresses are in trend these days + they'll make you look like a literal thriving queen!
  • Plaid pinafore dresses are personally my LOML.
  • Solid maxi dresses are a good choice too.

Accessories:

  • Belts: Go for minimalist brown or biege buckle up belts.
  • Lockets: Coin and heart shaped lockets almost always work.
  • Shoes: As it is summers, Go for minimal platform wedges or ballet flats. Minimalist flip-flops and crocs and lightweight oxfords work as well.
  • Hair accessories: I personally love knotted headbands and scrunchies. You can always mix up a little bit of different aesthetics as well. Also as it is summers, so headbands and bandanas would come handy in pulling your hair away from your face.
  • Bags: Suede bags are a big y-e-s. You can also go for any bag that looks minimalistic and is under the colour palette of Academia aesthetic.
